We will discuss your emergency contraception needs when you come to the Saint Mary’s Centre.
This may be important if no contraception was used at all or if a contraceptive method fails.

There are two methods used; the emergency contraceptive pill and the emergency intrauterine device (IUD or copper coil).

The emergency contraceptive pill

There are two types of emergency contraceptive pill (morning after pill). One can be taken up to 3 days after sex and the other up to 5 days after sex.

The doctor will discuss with you which one might be best for you. The sooner the emergency contraceptive pill is taken after sex, the more successful it is. It is possible to become pregnant even after taking it.

We can provide you with the emergency contraceptive pill.

Emergency intrauterine device (IUD or copper coil)

An IUD can be used up to five days after sex (and sometimes even longer depending when your last period was) A specially trained doctor or nurse must fit it and it is 99% effective. Your forensic doctor will be able to discuss with you if a coil is suitable for you.

If you feel unable to report a rape but want to find out more about emergency contraception you have other options. For example, your GP, Family Planning Service, pharmacies, A&E.

If in doubt please call the Centre and speak to one of our team.

Remember the earlier you have emergency contraception the better the chances of it working.
