SARC Demystified: Helping You to Support Patients After Sexual Assault is a practical one-day course designed to give doctors and other healthcare professionals the confidence to manage patients who have experienced rape or sexual assault, within their own clinical roles and workplaces. The day takes delegates on a guided patient journey through the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC).
From initial police response, through the Forensic Medical Examination, to ISVA support and counselling aftercare, so that even those with little prior exposure to this area can understand exactly what the SARC offers and how we can help.
We will focus on case studies for both adult and child presentations, equipping attendees to think through the health, forensic and safeguarding considerations, including how to seek advice and make appropriate referrals.
Specific topics such as non-fatal strangulation, pre-pubertal bleeding, anogenital warts and sexualised behaviour in children without disclosure are addressed, ensuring the course is directly relevant to the complex presentations healthcare professionals may encounter in their everyday practice. By the close of the day, delegates will leave with a clearer understanding of referral pathways, stronger safeguarding knowledge, and the practical confidence to support patients at the point of first contact — recognising that this course is not about training forensic examiners, but about empowering every healthcare professional to do right by their patient in that critical moment. Participants will also receive a certificate of attendance confirming a level 3 safeguarding adult and child update.
